I am still Green when it comes to Air Rifles. I bought a new HW77 a few months back which is my first contact with Air Rifle's for 40 odd Years.
I can well imagine a few of you seasoned campaigner's are saying to yourselves, not the Lube question again :] I have read through a great many Posts and I am still intrigued by the Pro's, Con's and the process. I come to this Lubricant question with many Years experience Casting Bullets for my Centrefire's and using a wide variety of Commercial and Home Mix Bullet Lubes. Cast Bullet Lube selection and Bullet diameter is critical for best accuracy and keeping your Centrefire Barrel free of Leading. I have not needed to use anything more than a dry Patch to clean my Barrels for years as a result of correct Alloy, Bullet diameter and Lube selection.
Imagine my surprise at the Crud that built up in my .177 HW77's Barrel after just a few Hundred Shots !
I ordered a Bottle of Napier Pellet Lube off EBay and it arrived the other Day. I have not seen it for Sale in any Gunshop's in my neck of the Woods. I opened the Bottle and to me it smells and looks like TQF Automatic Transmission Fluid. Now this makes sense to me as one of the better home mix Cast Bullet Lubes is Ed's Red which has TQF as one of it's ingredients.
I took the time to Degrease, Wash and Lubricate some Pellets as per Napier's directions today. I was surprised at the Crud that came off the Pro Pel Pellets [ a Picture of the Crow on the container ], absolutely filthy. They where lucky to group into 3"-4" at 25 Yards when I shot them, I reckon the filth may be half the reason. JSB Exact's and H&N Pellets where pretty clean. The real surprise was how clean el cheapo Winchester Dome Pellets where. They shot nearly as well as the JSB Exacts last time I went to the Range and are 1/3 the price. The JSB's and the Winchesters gave me the best groups out to 50 Yards.
I understand the vast difference between a Powder Burner and Lead Bullets VS an Air Rifle and Pellets. I am also intrigued with making my own Pellets despite the fact it is not an economical proposition.
I will test these Lubed Pellets on Thursday and look forward to your comments and experience
regards Jacko
