Hi Giles and everyone else
I am from South Africa and believe your law restricts your muzzle velocity number to under 12 ft/lbs. I subsequently hear most ft/lbs numbers reported as under 12. I have a Remington Express XP tactical .177 and understand the ft/lbs value to be 22.75 +-. My pellet is just under 8 grains.
My question is based on being new to air rifles and that is, I want to hunt small game and read that you should be hunting with at least 20 ft/lbs or more to take down game at 40 metres or so. Many hunting rifles from your videos are stated as hunting but the ft/lbs number is often below 12. How are you able to hunt ? Are these rifles not under powered?
I am pretty sure that I am not understanding something so any guidance would really be appreciated.
Thanks Giles et al

Hi! An answer from Sweden. Here you can hunt with a airgun, starting from 180 ms in .22 caliber, that equals about 16 joule and 12 foot pound of energy. You are not allowed to hunt with .177 here. So power is not everything. Have seen the American vids with .177 airguns blasting away with 1400 fps. Crazy. Pellets wobbling out of control and no precision. Don't think the gun will last either.

IMHO, more important than fpe is accuracy. I have no problem taking rabbits at 30 yards with a 12fpe gun. It does not take much power,it takes a 177 to the head.
